An FR-4 PCB (printed circuit board) is a circuit board manufactured using FR-4 as its base material, typically consisting of woven glass fiber reinforced with an epoxy resin system. This composite provides electrical insulation, mechanical strength, and reliable processing characteristics for a wide range of electronic applications. However, FR-4 is a material classification rather than a single fixed specification. Different FR-4 grades can have different glass transition temperatures (Tg), thermal properties, and dielectric characteristics, so selecting the right grade depends on your design and operating conditions.

FR-4 remains a popular choice for PCB manufacturing because it offers a practical balance of cost, performance, and design flexibility. Its broad material availability helps control costs for many standard electronic designs, while its glass fiber reinforcement provides structural support for rigid circuit boards. FR-4 supports single-sided, double-sided, and multilayer PCB designs and is compatible with common electronic components and SMT assembly processes. Depending on your requirements, you can also select specialized FR-4 grades to address higher thermal demands, environmental regulations, or specific electrical performance needs.
Summary

Performance
Balanced electrical and thermal behavior for mainstream applications.
Design Flexibility
Single/double/multilayer designs, compatible with SMT assembly.
| Grade | Tg | Typical Applications |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | ~130 | Consumer electronics · general applications |

Explore these FR-4 PCB manufacturing case studies from PCBMASTER to see how our engineering team tackles challenging prototyping, material selection, and design-for-manufacturing (DFM) requirements.
An industrial controller project required a six-layer FR-4 prototype for an upcoming hardware validation round. During fabrication review, PCBMASTER’s engineers found that several vias in a congested routing area left insufficient clearance from adjacent copper features. A full layout revision would have affected the customer’s validation schedule.
Solution & Result
Instead of redesigning the entire board, the engineers repositioned the affected vias and rerouted nearby traces while preserving the board outline, connector locations, and layer count. They then rechecked copper clearances and drill-to-copper spacing against the manufacturing requirements before releasing the revised files.
The updated design proceeded to prototype fabrication. The six-layer PCB connected the controller, sensor interfaces, and communication circuits, allowing the customer to continue hardware validation without a major redesign.
A power-control PCB designed for lead-free reflow assembly required a material review before production. The initial specification used standard FR-4, but the customer’s thermal requirements called for a closer assessment of the laminate’s suitability.
Solution & Result
PCBMASTER compared candidate high-Tg FR-4 materials using their Tg, decomposition temperature, and coefficient of thermal expansion, while checking compatibility with the specified board thickness and multilayer stack-up. For this example, the team selected a laminate with a Tg of 170°C rather than the initially specified 130°C grade, after confirming that the alternative met the project requirements and was available for production.
The approved material was incorporated into the manufacturing specification without changing the board’s overall layout. The finished PCB provided the interconnections for the power-control circuitry and was fabricated using the material selected for the project’s thermal and assembly requirements.
Before manufacturing an eight-layer FR-4 PCB, PCBMASTER’s engineers identified a clearance problem in a densely routed inner layer. In the initial design, the copper-to-hole clearance at several locations was only 0.10 mm, below the example project’s required manufacturing margin of 0.15 mm.
Solution & Result
Moving the vias indiscriminately would have disrupted nearby signal routes. The engineers instead relocated three affected vias and adjusted two short trace segments, increasing the minimum clearance to 0.18 mm while retaining the board outline and major component locations. The revised Gerber and drill data were checked again before fabrication.
The updated design met the specified clearance requirement and proceeded to production. The eight-layer PCB retained its intended circuit connections while removing the identified manufacturing risk from the affected routing area.

“The issue was a tight clearance on our six-layer FR-4 PCB. Nothing dramatic on screen, but it could have caused trouble during fabrication. PCBMASTER flagged it before production and explained what needed to change. That’s the kind of feedback I want from a PCB supplier—specific, technical, and actually useful.”
Daniel Brooks · Hardware Design Engineer · Industrial Automation · United States
“We do not approve a supplier based on one satisfactory delivery. We look at repeatability. FR-4 PCB thickness, hole dimensions, solder mask coverage, and compliance with the approved specifications must remain consistent across orders. That is the standard we expect, and it is how we assess whether a supplier is suitable for ongoing production.”
Michael Weber · Quality Assurance Manager · Industrial Electronics · Germany
“Our quantities? They change. A few boards for a prototype, more for testing, then a pilot run if everything checks out. That is how product development works. I don’t want to restart supplier selection every time the numbers move, so having PCBMASTER handle different FR-4 PCB order volumes is a real practical advantage.”
Alex Morgan · Procurement Specialist · Medical Electronics · United Kingdom
“Two suppliers, two sets of emails, and everyone pointing fingers when something goes wrong. Been there. When you source FR-4 PCBs and PCBA separately, even a simple assembly issue can turn into a long back-and-forth. Having both services coordinated through PCBMASTER gives our team fewer handoffs and a more direct way to sort things out.”
Carlos Mendes · Electronics Development Manager · Energy Management · Brazil
